Have you seen a Cherry Blossoms? We sometimes heard that it can only be spotted at Japan and South Korea. Yet here in the Philippines it is not new that we have a couple of its own flower species which look close enough to the famed Cherry Blossoms of colder climate. Here in our country we do also have our very own Sakura Park loocated in Atok, Benguet. The park is filled with blossom bearing trees.
According to a report from CNN Philippines, over 30 cherry blossom-producing trees, along with other tree species from Japan were planted in Atok to celebrate the 40th anniversary of ties between the Kochi prefecture and Benguet province. These trees are expected to bloom in 3 years.
The said park is situated 2,000 meters above sea level and will be opened to campers. The Philippine Star said that Atok is about a 3-hour drive away from Baguio. The weather at Atok is cold enough compared in Metro Manila and other provinces. Cherry blossoms tend to bloom around April and for quite a short time. You only have about 2 weeks to see these flowers in bloom.
Officials from the Atok municipality as well as representatives from Kochi and the Japanese embassy attended the planting event.
A Facebook post from the Philippine Information Agency in Cordillera said that representatives from the Department of Tourism (DOT) and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) were also there.
“The two agencies committed to support the project not only in the preservation of the environment and natural resources but also as tourist destination once the trees will grow and bear flowers,” the post read.
Now, you don’t have to be sad if you cannot afford to visit Japan or South Korea because we will now soon have our own Cherry Blossoms here. Many Filipinos were already excited for the trees to bloom and for the whole park to open.
