Will this finally resolve the issue regarding discrimination when it comes to the usage of restrooms.
In the wake of the issue regarding gender equality in connection with the recent incident involving a transgender being denied entrance at a female comfort room, many establishments have shown support for the
LGBTQ community by installing all-gender restrooms to accomodate them. Today, SM Supermalls is joining the cause, and has announced that they will be installing all-gender restrooms in its premier malls across Metro Manila, including SM Mall of Asia, SM City North EDSA, SM Megamall, SM Aura Premier, The Podium, and at SM Seaside City Cebu beginning November 2019.
“With inclusivity and innovation at the core of everything we do, we endeavor to create spaces where all shoppers are welcome,” said SM Supermalls COO Steven Tan.
Since the restroom is often seen as an intimate space which should be treated with utmost privacy, many women (and men) refuse to let trangenders use the gender-assigned restrooms claiming it can be uncomfortable and inappropriate. However, many citizens believe that the LGBTQ community deserves equality as well, and that they should at least get a restroom of their own if they
are denied entrance to gender-assigned ones.
There were mixed reactions from netizens, who expressed how they felt regarding SM Supermalls’ decision. “I will never step foot in those places who’s moral compass is way off. Boycott these places. End the madness,” said one netizen. “I hope they can guarantee the safety of everyone,” says another concerned citizen.
