BREAKING NEWS: Korean Girl Group f(x) Member Sulli Dies in Apparent Suicide

Sulli was only 25 years old.

After SHiNee’s Jong Hyun took his own life, the world was made aware of how many Korean idols and celebrities suffer from depression and take their own lives. The world was shocked as to how such a successful person would take his own life at a very young age. However, what many people do not realize is that the suicide rate in South Korea is very high and is dangerously rising as of late. As a matter of fact, the suicide rate in South Korea is the 10th highest rate in the world according to the World Health Organization, as well as the second highest suicide rate in the OECD after Lithuania. In 2012, suicide was the fourth-highest cause of death among South Koreans.

Today, yet another celebrity joins Jong Hyun in his sad fate. Choi Jin-ri, or better known by her stage name Sulli, was found by her colleague at her apartment around 4:30pm KST, and reported the incident to the police. The time of death has been reported to be around 4:00pm KST.

Her cause of death is yet to be determined, but the police are not ruling out suicide. They are currently checking whether Sulli left a suicide note, and will also investigate the exact details of the incident. SM Entertainment has yet to respond. “I have heard the rumors and reports, and I am hoping that it is not true. It is also a frustrating situation for us as well, as we cannot reach them,” says an SM Entertainment Official.

Back in 2014, Sulli has been open about her struggles with trolling and malicious comments she was receiving online. She left f(x) on hiatus and left the group for good in 2015. At that, time, SME released a statement that read: “f(x) member Sulli became mentally and physically exhausted from the continuous, malicious comments and false rumours, and has expressed her wish to take a break from her celebrity activities for the time being.”

Sulli first gained attention as a child actress, playing the young Princess Seonhwa of Silla in the SBS drama Ballad of Seodong (2005).
